A thermal printer and a control method for the thermal printer. The thermal printer comprises a central control unit (1), a print head controller (3) connected to the central control unit (1), and a thermal print head (2) connected to the print head controller (3) and for use, under the control of the print head controller (3), in scanning a master copy to acquire image data of the master copy. This solves the problem of structural complexity in thermal printers having a scan feature.
