Disclosed is a video playback device that can output, to a video display device, a 3-D video signal allowing stereoscopic video display, or a non-3-D video signal allowing non-stereoscopic video display. The video playback device has: an AV processing unit that inputs content data and constructs a 3-D or non-3-D video signal from the content data; an output unit that outputs, to the video display device, the 3-D or non-3-D video signal constructed by the AV processing unit in a 3-D video output format for outputting video signals for stereoscopic video display; and a receiving unit for receiving commands input by a user. If the receiving unit receives a command indicating non-3-D display of the video content when the output unit is outputting a 3-D video signal in the 3-D video output format, the AV processing unit generates a non-3-D video signal from the content data, and the output unit outputs the non-3-D video signal to the video display device in a 3-D video output mode. |
