PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device and method capable of improving stability in focusing and also capable of reducing discomfort given to a photographer, at an AF control using a detection function of a predetermined subject.SOLUTION: A focusing device includes: means 113 for generating an AF evaluation value from an electric signal corresponding to a preset focus detection area including a predetermined subject; control means 114 for driving and controlling a focus lens 105 to adjust focus; and means 114 for determining existence of a movement of the subject in at least one of horizontal and vertical directions. The control means includes a first focus operation mode and a second focus operation mode different from the first focus operation mode with regard to a drive control mode of the focus lens and configured to perform a tracking drive operation corresponding to a distance change of the subject. If it is determined that there exists a predetermined movement of the subject, the control means restricts the second focus operation mode. |
