This valve timing control device (100) is equipped with an advanced angle control starting means (30) that begins controlling the relative rotational position of the camshaft with respect to the crankshaft to the advanced-angle side when an internal combustion engine (1) starts up and the valve lift amount for an intake valve (14) or an exhaust valve (16) is increasing, and/or is equipped with a retarded angle control starting means (30) that begins controlling the relative rotational position to the retarded-angle side when the internal combustion engine starts up and the valve lift amount for the intake valve or the exhaust valve is decreasing. By means of such a construction it is possible to appropriately release the locking, by means of lock mechanisms (253, 263), of first rotating bodies (252, 262) that rotate synchronously with the rotation of the camshaft and second rotating bodies (251, 261) that rotate synchronously with the rotation of the crankshaft. |
