[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] The joints in a metal container used for housing electrical components such as capacitors, resistors and transformers are sealed with a resinous sealing material such as an epoxy resin, the joints in the container being so arranged that the two parts of the container to be joined form between them a narrow gap or passage so that on the application of heat the resinous material which has been placed in a viscous or solid state in the vicinity of the gap melts and flows by capillary attraction into the gap or passage where it solidifies and provides a seal for the container. In Fig. 1 the container comprises a cylindrical portion 11 and a metal closure disc 12 which is pre-formed with a central raised portion 19 and upturned flange 13. The cylindrical portion 11 is formed with an inwardly-directed rib 14 on which the disc 12 rests and the rim 15 of the cylindrical portion is bent over so that its edge lies within the flange 13 of the disc 12. The plastic sealing compound is distributed around the disc 12 close to the rim 15 so that on heating the material until it is in a thin liquid state it flows by capillary attraction into the gap between the flange 13 and the rim 15, thus sealing the container. Similar but modified constructions are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). Fig. 4 shows the invention applied to sealing up a metal can of rectangular section, the edges of the container where the seaming is to take place being folded around one another as shown in the Figure to form a tortuous passage 26 so that on the application of sealing material to the portion to be seamed and subsequent heating the material flows into the passage 26 and seals the container.
