PURPOSE: A display device and an item selection method are provided to control an item when a pointer, which is not overlapped with the item, is positioned in a surrounding area, thereby improving user convenience. CONSTITUTION: A display unit (110) displays an item and a pointer on a screen. A user interface (UI) unit (120) receives a user operation for moving the pointer. When the pointer accesses to the item, a control unit (130) displays a graphical user interface (GUI) which shows whether or not the item is selected as the pointer when the pointer is not overlapped with the item. When the pointer is positioned in the surrounding area of the item, the control unit determines that the pointer is close to the item.
