A rotary engine, such as a cat and mouse engine, comprises a casing 1, a first and second rotor-piston 2, 3 within the casing sharing a common axis of rotation 4 and a first and second power shaft 5, 6 rotatably mounted on the casing at either end of the rotor pistons, where the rotation axis 7, 8 of the power shafts are substantially inclined to the common rotation axis at an equal angle and the rotation axis of the power shafts and the common axis of rotation are coplanar. The first power shaft is connected by a first universal joint to the first rotor-piston and to the second rotor-piston by a second universal joint nested within the first, with the same arrangement connecting the second power shaft to the rotor-pistons. Blades may be attached to the engine to create a backpack helicopter. |
