A computer system (500) to prevent identity theft stores (2002) account equivalent information consisting of alpha-numerical characters selected from a portion of personal information of a consumer. The account equivalent information identifies an account of the consumer, but is insufficient to recover the personal information. A photo of the consumer and/or a challenge question and corresponding answer created by the consumer are also stored (2004, 2005). A communications device transmits the photo and/or the challenge question to a user when the account equivalent information is received from the user.
