An aqueous solution or dispersion containing an ammonium or amine salt of a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene with maleic anhydride or a partial ester of maleic acid and an aliphatic polyamine, is used to impregnate textile fibre, yarn or fabric. The treated textile material is then heated to form an insoluble resin thereon. Substituted styrenes specified are methyl, butyl and chloro-styrenes. Mono isopropyl maleate is specified as a partial ester. Polyamines specified are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine and tetraethylene pentamine. The copolymers may contain minor amounts of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl ethyl ether, indene, vinyl methyl ketone and acrylic esters. Suitable copolymer salts include those of ammonia, guanidine, methyl-, butyl-, and amyl-amines, and phenyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide. The textile to be treated may be cotton, viscose rayon, acetate rayon, nylon, glass, linen, flax, hemp, jute, ramie, wool, silk, cuprammonium rayon, synthetic yarns such as vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and that known under the trade name Aralac.ALSO:Textile materials are impregnated with an aqueous solution or dispersion of an ammonium or amine salt of a copolymer of styrene or substituted styrene and maleic anhydride or a monoester of maleic acid, and an aliphatic polyamine, the material then being heated to form an insoluble resin thereon. The textile to be treated may be fibres, threads or fabrics of cotton, viscose rayon, acetate rayon, nylon, glass, linen, flax, hemp, jute, ramie, wool, silk, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, and the material known as Aralac. The treatment improves the strength of the materials and stiffens them.
|
