A method and an apparatus for compensating for horizontal lines of a flat display device are provided to improve brightness of a defect region by compensating for horizontal line typed spots through data modulation. Brightness is measured by supplying data having the same gray scale to a display unit of a flat display panel(S4). Based on the measured result, a horizontal line detect region is detected in the display unit of the flat display panel(S5). Digital video data to be displayed in the horizontal line detect region is modulated to compensation values and the variation of brightness in the horizontal line detect region is checked. When the brightness at a reference plane in the display unit and the horizontal line detect region are equalized, a compensation value is selected(S7). The selected compensating value is stored in a memory(S8). By modulating the digital video data using the compensation value stored in the memory, images are displayed in the flat display panel. |
