The method involves providing a stack (2) of elementary cells, where each cell includes an anode and a cathode. The anodes form an anode compartment (3) that is supplied with hydrogen, and the cathodes form a cathode compartment (4) that is supplied with air. A cooling circuit (5) comprising a pump (8) is utilized for selectively exchanging heat with a cooling liquid. Temperature of the cells is maintained between 40 and 120 degrees Celsius. An air supply is provided in the cathode compartment with a flow rate of air between 50 and 150 percent during operation of the stack of cells.
