PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting an image area of a vehicle license plate and a method thereof are provided to detect the vertical segment elements of an edge outline from a vehicle license plate image, and are provided to determine a candidate image are of the vehicle license plate according to the existence of the horizontal segment elements, which correspond to the detected vertical segment elements. CONSTITUTION: A location information generator (130) generates the vertical edge information which includes the location information of each vertical direction boundary segment, from a binary image of an image which photographed a license plate.
