PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a sheet thickness by a simple configuration using a sheet conveying mechanism.SOLUTION: A sheet conveying device includes a conveying roller arranged at an inner peripheral side of a curved portion of a conveying path of a sheet; a driving means for rotating and driving the conveying roller; a drive control means for controlling a rotation speed of the conveying roller by the driving means; a rotation speed detection means for detecting the rotation speed of the conveying roller; a conveying means for conveying the sheet while being laid across between the conveying roller and itself; a conveying speed detecting means for detecting a conveying speed of the sheet; and a sheet thickness detecting means for detecting a thickness of the sheet based on the conveying speed of the sheet detected by the conveying speed detecting means, a radius of the conveying roller, and the rotation speed of the conveying roller detected by the rotation speed detecting means.
