A multi-stage energy absorbing system comprising a base (12) and an energy absorber (14) comprising elements, wherein the energy absorber elements comprise a pair of outer sidewalls (24) having a narrow section (30) with a narrow section angle and a wide section (32) with a wide section angle, wherein the narrow section (30) and the wide section (32) are connected by a diverging section (26) with a diverging section angle, wherein the diverging section angle is less than 90°; a connecting wall (18) between the outer sidewalls (24); a pair of inner sidewalls (20); and an inner connecting wall (22), wherein the energy absorbing elements are in a nested arrangement creating an open area between adjacent sidewalls and adjacent connecting walls.
