The radiator i.e. beam head (1), has a linear accelerator comprising a shield (12), a front-sided input opening and a front-sided output opening. An electron source is arranged at the input opening, and a collimator (7) having a shield (13) is arranged at the output opening, where electrons are accelerated within the accelerator and X-ray retardation radiation is generated during impinging of the electrons on a target. The shields are designed as self-supporting shields, and a high-frequency generation unit is arranged in a housing (21) that is arranged at an outer side of one of the shields.
