PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine capable of reducing a distance in a control shaft direction from a cam of a cam shaft to a cam surface of a swing cam.SOLUTION: Toothless sections 51, 52 in which a part of teeth in the circumferential direction are removed are formed on a ring gear 39 and a pinion gear 38, and cam surfaces 34 of swing cams 26 are placed inside the toothless sections 51, 52, for swinging a cam follower 25 by a rotating cam 16 of the cam shaft 15, connecting the swing cams 26 positioned on both sides of the cam follower 25 by the ring gear 39 and the pinion gear 38, revolving either one of the ring gear 39 and the pinion gear 38 around the axis of a control shaft 20 by the rotation of the control shaft 20, and changing the lift characteristic of a valve 6 by the cam surfaces 34 of the swing cams 26 by changing the relative position of the swing cams 26 with respect to the valve 6 by such orbital motion. Also the cam surfaces 34 of the swing cams 26 are projected along the control shaft 20 against a cylindrical boss section 33 of the swing cams 26. |
