The switch device (1) has controllable switch (3) for connecting and disconnecting an electrical connection between a power source (4) and a consumer (5). A measuring device (8) detects the current flowing through the switch. A voltage measuring device (9) detects an input voltage of the switch. An evaluation device (6) controls the switch in function of the detected current and detected input voltage. An independent claim is included for method for operating switch device.
