[Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group II] An air cleaner casing 10 pear-shaped in crosssection, contains a core 17 having a screw blade 18 with its outer edge engaging the inner surface of the casing and the lower edge of each turn cut off horizontally preferably at the junction of the casing and a sludge tank 13. A passage formed by the blade between a tangential inlet 11 to a sirhilar outlet 12 is of uniform cross-section up .to a point 21, is then narrowed by an expanded portion 22 of the core and finally is enlarged at an end compartment 31 preceding the outlet. Water or other liquid is supplied through a tank 32 with overflow pipe 35 which provides a level within the casing submerging the bottom parts of the blade. Air is caused to flow along the helical passage by a fan either at the inlet or outlet end. Owing to the progressive fall in pressure the liquid level rises in successive compartments 28 ... 31, the air gap between the core and liquid thus diminishing. To avoid this and so maintain a constant air speed the pitch of the blade may be increased or the bottom of the core may be stepped or slope upwardly towards the outlet end.
