Pieces of foamed polyurethane having one non-porous surface skin are formed into objects by sealing the edges of a single piece by fusion and compression or by joining one piece to other pieces of polyurethane at the edges by any method. The material with one closed surface is obtained when the top portion of a foamed layer of polyurethane is sliced off to leave a wholly porous layer of uniform thickness and yield the portion of irregular thickness with one irregular closed surface. Irregularities of the closed surface may disappear if the material is stretched when the edges are sealed. A great variety of articles which may be made by combination of a suitable number of suitably shaped pieces is listed in the Specification. If a number of pieces are united to produce an object the whole outer surface of which is formed of the closed surface layer, air- and water-tight articles may be made. In such articles the interposition of intermediate layers minimizes risks of leakage due to puncturing of closed outer layers. Material between outer edges may be locally united to yield seams, which may have strengthening and decorative value. In examples: (1) a pad which may be used as a brush is formed by unifying by sealing the edges 3, Figs. 1, 2, of a piece of foamed polyurethane having a closed surface 1, porous portion 2 and porous surface 4. A spanning band 37 may be attached with the welded edges and serves for holding the pad. Several pieces of material may be united in this way (see Fig. 6), by fastening their edges together to form similar objects which may have either porous or closed under-surfaces as well as a closed top surface. Such an object may be used for packing articles between the layers before the last portion of the edges is closed by sealing. Welded seams may also be provided across the middle portions of such objects, e.g. to form more compartments. Fig. 7 shows a device for welding edges and cutting the welded material. Other objects illustrated are a flower pot casing and a camp bed with attached head-rest.
