The invention relates to a method for the selective reduction of a secosteroid derivative to stereoisomerically pure, singly reduced compounds (seconols) by means of an enzyme from the class of alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs), which method allows the regioselective as well as stereoselective synthesis of seconols of high product purity.
