The method involves determining an operating parameter or multiple operating parameters of a converter, where an output voltage setpoint (Un-soll) is determined based on the operating parameter or multiple operating parameters of the converter. A negative output voltage is generated by a control unit (50',50'') for controlling a semiconductor switch (110) with respect to an emitter (E) of the semiconductor switch. The height of the negative output voltage depends from the output voltage setpoint. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for controlling the turn-off speed of a semiconductor switch; and (2) a converter with a rectifier unit.
