摘要
629,344. Moulding rubber insulation on wire. BENBOW, B. W. April 18, 1945, No. 9749. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 27, 1947]. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Relates to a machine for moulding on a wire an insulating sheath of rubber which may be allowed to stay on the wire or may be taken off to form a sheath, Figs. 11 and 12, which has a channel 141 to receive a conductor and a series of spaced openings 143 to allow spaced conducting teeth on a trolley to contact with the conductor, the latter being inserted through a longitudinal slit 142 which is then suitably clamped. The machine comprises a heated moulding and vulcanizing wheel 10 having one or more mould cavities 42 into which rubber is pressed around wires 12 located in the cavities. The pressure is applied by an endless metal band 11 which passes around pulley wheel 23, wheel 10, pulley wheel 25, back to tensioning pulley wheel 24 and so on to pulley wheel 23. Preformed rubber stock 14 is fed to the band as shown in Fig. 1a and is carried by the band around wheel 23 and into the nip formed between the band and moulding wheel 10. As shown, the stock consists of five U-shaped rubber strips, which are moulded around five wires, and these strips are guided on the wheel 23 by spaced fingers 102. Means for pressing the strips against the band to effect feeding of the strips comprises rollers 111, 112, which are journalled in spaced stationary fingers extending into the nip. The five moulding cavities are formed by rings 37...40 clamped or welded to the wheel 10. The wires 12 are endless and are fed into the mould cavities, where they seat on spaced teeth 43 on the rings 39. To ensure proper seating of the wires, they are fed to the wheel 10 over a roller (Fig. 3, not shown) which is oscillated to give them a small lateral movement. The moulding wheel is heated to cure the rubber. The heating may be electric, or as shown, steam is introduced into a chamber 46, Fig. 6, in the rim of the wheel by pipes 47. Condensed water is drained by pipes 52 through valves 54 which are opened as they pass a cam 57 adjustably mounted on the wheel bearing. The cured sheaths then pass over the wheel 25 and separate from the band 11 which returns to the wheel 24. The sheaths pass through a chamber where they are cooled by a water spray and then between rollers over fixed knives which cut the slits 142. They are then stripped from the wires 12 which pass over an idle pulley and back to the wheel 10. To mould the sheaths directly round the wires, the slitting knives are dispensed with and the wires are supplied to the wheel 10 from a reel. The wires may have projections to assist the bonding of the sheaths to them. As the moulded sheaths leave the cooling chamber they may be trimmed as by suitably placed grinding wheels. The machine is driven by a motor 59, and a motor 60 is used to drive it, through a clutch 68, at a higher speed for setting up. Specification 629,376, [Group XXX], is referred to.
