The device has a heat exchanger (100) that is made into contact with slab. The heat exchanger made of elastic, is provided with a cooling passage (110) through which heat transfer medium or coolant passage is flowed. The heat exchanger is provided with pressing structures (130-1-130-3) that are provided in the form of field elements or hydraulic cylinders, for pressing surface elements (120-1-120-3). The heat transfer coefficient during contact of heat exchanger and surface of the slab is 1000 W/m2K. An independent claim is included for method for operating the device for recovering energy from hot slab.
