PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve capacity, cycle characteristic and rate characteristic of a battery and also suppress gas generation when cycled in a lithium ion secondary battery charged/discharged at a high charging voltage.SOLUTION: A lithium ion secondary battery includes: a positive electrode collector; and a cathode active material layer formed on the surface of the positive electrode collector. A cathode active material is comprised of secondary particles composed of primary particles. A part of the surface of the primary particles is covered with a lithium metal oxide layer, and the rest of the surface of the primary particles is a positive electrode for the lithium ion secondary battery that is covered with a metal oxide layer of a cubic crystal.
