PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which can appropriately control exposure and to provide a control method of the imaging apparatus and a program.SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 100: acquires an image signal showing a subject; detects a region showing a main subject in an image; calculates an exposure correction amount by using luminance in the image shown in the acquired image signal; divides the image into a main subject region and one ore more background regions by using the detected region; determines whether the image is an image where halation cannot be permitted by using saturation or luminance in the divided background region; and changes the exposure correction amount calculated so that the luminance in the adjacent background region is less than saturation luminance when the image is determined to be the image where the halation cannot be permitted.
