The device has an eyeglass frame (1) worn by a user, and a protective filter (2) i.e. laser protection filter, supported at the frame. A sensor provides output signal based on position of eye (6) of a user relative to the frame and/or the filter. An evaluation unit evaluates the signal and determines whether the position of the eye of the user relative to the frame and/or the filter corresponds to a predetermined position based on the output signal. The sensor has a light source e.g. laser light source or LED, for generating light beams in near-infrared wavelength range.
