Volatile polymerization products of ethylene, consisting preponderantly of butene, are produced using a mixture of an aluminium trialkyl and a tetrabutyl ester of titanic acid or zirconic acid as polymerization catalyst. Higher olefins such as hexene and octene and high molecular weight polyethylenes are also produced. The process may be carried out at 20-150 DEG C. and with the ethylene at pressures or partial pressures of 0.2-20 atmos. The alkyl radicals of the aluminium trialkyl may contain 2-6 carbon atoms; compounds referred to are triethyl, triisobutyl and trihexyl aluminium. The ethylene may be recycled and the polymerization products formed condensed or washed out at a point in the recycle circuit. Examples are given of the preparation of n-butene and mixtures of n-butene and isobutene. |
