The cooking hob (11) has distributedly arranged cooking points (15a-15d) with a heating device and an electromechanical operating element for operating the cooking points. A proximity sensor or a contact sensor is provided for identifying approach or contact to the operating element by an operating person. A display device has display units e.g. LEDs (33a-33c), where each display unit is assigned to each cooking point. A controller controls the display unit during approach or contact to the operating element of the cooking point assigned to the display unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a cooking hob.
