PURPOSE: An electric compressor of an air conditioner for a vehicle and a control method thereof are provided to reduce noise in a vehicle by individually controlling the rotation number of the compressor in an electric vehicle mode and a non-electric vehicle mode. CONSTITUTION: An electric compressor (10) of an air conditioner for a vehicle comprises a refrigerant compressing part (11), an electric motor (12), an inverter part (13), and a control part (14). The refrigerant compressing part compresses a refrigerant. The electric motor transfers rotational power to the refrigerant compressing part. The inverter part converts DC power inputted from a battery (15) into AC power and supplies the converted power to the electric motor. The control part controls the output of the inverter part by receiving the on/off information of an electric pump (16) and confirms the on/off of an engine (20) depending on the on/off information of the electric pump. The control part determines the range of the outputted power of the inverter part depending on whether a vehicle is in an electric vehicle mode or not.
