The method involves selecting a map among a set of pre-recorded maps (70) depending on power delivered by a thermal engine i.e. diesel engine, and power delivered by an electric machine of a vehicle e.g. hybrid vehicle. The thermal engine is controlled (78) according to a value of an adjustable parameter calculated from the selected maps. A ratio of a relationship between the power delivered by the thermal engine and the power delivered by the electric machine is calculated (68). The maps are selected according to the ratio. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an information recording medium comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for controlling a thermal engine (2) a control device for a thermal engine of a vehicle.
