Producing a rare earth oxysulfide, comprises (a) reacting a rare earth oxide with polysulfide under reducing conditions, to obtain a binary rare-earth sulfide, and (b) converting the obtained binary rare earth sulfide to the rare earth oxysulfide. Independent claims are also included for: (1) rare earth oxysulfide comprising a lamellar structure, produced by the above method; and (2) a light product comprising the above rare earth oxysulfide.
