PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel excavator that can prevent a decrease in excavating speed and a situation where excavation is impossible, and a method of cutting an obstacle with the tunnel excavator.SOLUTION: A rotation direction of a cutter head 13 is alternately reversed in an automatic manner according to a set rotational frequency of the cutter head 13 and an operating pressure of a cutter drive motor 14, to make it possible to cut an obstacle for excavation while preventing the entanglement of a reinforcing-bar and PC steel wire thereof.
