PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a &bgr;-zeolite which has a high catalytic activity and is rarely deactivated.SOLUTION: The &bgr;-zeolite has a substantially octahedral shape and an Si/Al ratio of ≥5, and is a proton type. The Si/Al ratio is preferably ≥40. The &bgr;-zeolite is preferably one produced by carrying out the ion exchange of a raw material &bgr;-zeolite, which is synthesized without using any structure-directing agent, to transform the raw material &bgr;-zeolite into an ammonium-type &bgr;-zeolite, exposing the resultant &bgr;-zeolite to water vapor, and then subjecting the exposed &bgr;-zeolite to a treatment with an acid.
