The present invention relates to [1] a method of producing 1-(2-t-butyl cyclohexyloxy)-2-alkanol involving a step for adjusting to 7.5-10.0 the pH of, and hydrogenating, a raw material mixture containing 1-(2-t-butyl phenyloxy)-2-alkanol represented by formula (1) in the presence of (A) a palladium catalyst and (B) a metal catalyst containing one or more elements selected from ruthenium, rhodium, platinum and nickel, and further relates to [2] a perfume composition containing 1-(2-t-butyl cyclohexyloxy)-2-alkanol obtained by said method. The present invention provides an efficient method of producing 1-(2-t-butyl cyclohexyloxy)-2-alkanol which has a high trans-isomer content and which, as a perfume material, has a strong amber or wood fragrance and excellent persistence of aroma. (In the formula, R1 is a methyl group or an ethyl group.) |
