PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure determination method which allows for accurate determination of a failure, e.g., a failure of an arrestor element, without making a normal product unusable, in an arrestor where the arrestor element having a follow current interruption function and a gap are connected in series.SOLUTION: The failure determination method of an arrestor includes the steps of: connecting a resonance auxiliary means 4 in series with a sample arrestor 1, and connecting a DC voltage generator 5 across a series circuit consisting of the sample arrestor 1 and the resonance auxiliary means 4; applying a DC voltage higher than the voltage at which the DC voltage generator 5 starts discharge in the series gap 3 of the sample arrestor 1; detecting the transient discharge current of the sample arrestor 1; comparing the amplitude, oscillation frequency or oscillation period of the transient discharge current of the sample arrestor 1 with those of a normal arrestor under the same conditions; and determining that the sample arrestor 1 has failed if there is a difference of a specified value or more in the amplitude, oscillation frequency or oscillation period as a result of comparison. |
