A method for producing a chemical by continuous fermentation, said method comprising: (a) fermenting a starting material by culturing cells in a liquid culture medium in a fermentation tank to form a chemical; (b) filtering the liquid culture medium by using a separation membrane module; (c) while holding within the fermentation tank the liquid not permeating in the filtration, separating the permeating liquid, which contains the chemical, from the liquid culture medium; and (d) while supplying a liquid to the separation membrane module, supplying a gas from the lower part of the separation membrane module and/or a pipe, said pipe connecting the fermentation tank to the separation membrane module, so as to control the linear gas velocity in the separation membrane module to 0.15-70 cm/s inclusive. |
