The method involves limiting an exhaust gas pressure in a region of an exhaust gas system (7) adjacent to cylinders (3-6). A pressure drop in the region of the exhaust gas system is carried out until the exhaust gas pressure in the region does not exceed a threshold value. The pressure in the region of the exhaust gas system adjacent to the cylinders is lowered by driving exhaust gas into an environment and rerouting the exhaust gas within the exhaust gas system and into an intake system of an engine (2). An independent claim is also included for a protective device for an engine.
