An air conditioner and a method of controlling the same are provided to determine a state before a user goes into deep sleep through a location and motion of a user, thereby performing an exact sleep function at an exact time. An air conditioner comprises a sensing unit and a controller(40). The sensing unit senses human motion. The sensing unit comprises the first sensing unit(20) and the second sensing unit(30). The first sensing unit senses an absolute temperature of an air conditioning space. The second sensing unit senses an infrared ray change in the air conditioning space. In a sleep mode, the controller determines a falling asleep state of a person. If the person is in the falling asleep state, an air conditioner is operated in a good sleep mode. |
