A communications apparatus which operates using a standard 3GPP multi-layer protocol stack (or possibly another protocol stack), the communications apparatus comprising an application processor 12 and a communications processor 16, wherein the communications processor 16 is configured to handle all functionality related to paging of the communications apparatus without intervention from the application processor. The communications processor 16 may be configured to implement the functionality related to the lower layers of the 3GPP protocol stack (i.e. layers 1-3, a single layer or the physical layer) and the application processor configured to implement functionality related to the upper layers of the 3GPP protocol stack. As the application processor 12 does not need to wake up upon paging, battery life is increased. |
