A hydrophilized article includes (a) a substrate having a hydrophobic surface, and (b) a hydrophilizing layer disposed on at least a portion of the hydrophobic surface of the substrate. Said layer comprising an alkoxylated organophosphonate or a mixture of an alkoxylated organophosphonate and a vinyl alcohol material.
