<p>Video data is encoded (and subsequently decoded) as a plurality of frames (20), including intermediate frames, each of which is encoded based on at least one reference frame and at least some of which are encoded based on multiple reference frames. A current list of reference frames (10) for each intermediate frame is maintained at the encoder. The plurality of intermediate frames (K, N) are transmitted, each intermediate frame being transmitted in association with a current list (10k, 10N...) of reference frames for that frame. Thereby, undefined situations in the decoder and subsequent failure is avoided if memory management control operation (MMCO) commands are lost. At least one of the reference frames in the list may be marked (e.g. appending to the marked frame a MMCO to be transmitted indicating frame status) as a long term reference frame in the encoder, thereby indicating that the reference frame is to be stored until subject to an update command. At least one of the reference frames in the list may also be marked as a short term reference frame thereby indicating that the reference frame can be overwritten without being subject to an update command.</p> |
