A boring-bar 1 comprises a longitudinallydisplaceable and rotatable element 12 by which the tool carrier 7 is both adjusted and clamped. The tool 70 is clamped in a square- or circular-section carrier 7 having teeth 8 engaged by a scroll cam 13 on the spindle 12. The spindle is rotated by worm gearing 28<SP>1</SP>, 17 to adjust the tool radially. The carrier is clamped in position by moving the spindle 12 axially by worm gearing 19 rotating a nut 18 engaging a threaded boss 10 on the bar 1. The bar is made of several interfitting sections 21, and the spindle 12 of sections joined by flat keys 27. A pilot pin 23 is also provided The nut 18 is adjusted by a hand wheel 33 through gearing 32, 31, 29, 28. Similarly a hand wheel 41 adjusts the member 17 which rotates the spindle 12, the adjustment being indicated by a scale 43.
