The coating comprises thermoplastic fluoroplastic(s) (I) and shows a hardness which decreases from the surface in contact with the substrate to the other surface away from the substrate. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a method for the production of a coating as described above by applying layers of plastic of decreasing hardness to a base, and then sintering or melting the layers by heating; and (b) a seal, especially a cylinder head gasket, consisting of or provided with a coating as described.
