PURPOSE: An electric power steering system and a method for processing failsafe of the same are provided to allow a driver to rapidly recognize a dangerous situation by flickering a warning lamp for a predetermined time, reducing a target current value, and outputting to a motor in the malfunction of a torque sensor. CONSTITUTION: An electric power steering system (1) comprises a torque sensor (11), a steering angle sensor (12), an electronic control unit (13), and a motor (14). The torque sensor measures torque according to the operation of a steering wheel by the driver of a vehicle. The steering angle sensor measures the steering angle of the vehicle. The electronic control unit determines the malfunction of the torque sensor using the level of main and sub torque signals transmitted from the torque sensor. The electronic control unit flickers a warning lamp for a predetermined time when the steering angle is within a reference range and controls to reduce and output a target current value in the malfunction of the torque sensor. The motor generates steering assistant power on the basis of the target current value output from the electronic control unit.
