PURPOSE: A mesoporous xerogel nickel-alumina catalyst, a method for preparing the same, and a method for preparing methane using the catalyst are provided to improve the resistance of the catalyst to carbon species deposition and to improve the reproducibility of the catalyst. CONSTITUTION: A mesoporous xerogel nickel-alumina catalyst includes 10 to 60 parts by weight of nickel based on 100 parts by weight of the catalyst. The xerogel nickel-alumina catalyst includes nickel aluminate phase. Nickel species are dispersed on spinel shaped alumina. A method for preparing the catalyst includes the following: an aluminum precursor is dissolved in a heated alcohol solvent to prepare a solution; the mixed solution of water, acid and alcohol is added into the solution and is hydrated to form sol; the sol is cooled; a nickel precursor is added to the sol to form nickel-alumina sol; the nickel-alumina sol is cooled to hydrated and condensed with the mixed solution of water and alcohol; the nickel-alumina gel is aged; and the aged gel is dried and thermally treated. |
