PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and a method for operating the same are provided to allow the device to autonomously implement a repair operation, thereby increasing the lifetime of the device. CONSTITUTION: A semiconductor memory device includes a memory cell array (210), a data compressing part (220), and a repair control part (230). The memory cell array includes a normal memory cell and a redundancy memory cell, and stores data. The data compressing part compresses the multiple data in the memory cell array, and generates compression information. The repair control part controls a repair operation for accessing the redundancy memory cell in response to the compression information.
