PURPOSE: An apparatus for driving a plasma display panel and a method thereof are provided to prevent excessive discharge and mis-discharge of a monochromatic lamp by decreasing a reset ramp down flat time of a scan signal. CONSTITUTION: A scan driving unit (30) prevents excessive discharge and mis-discharge in displaying a monochromatic lamp pattern, by decreasing a reset ramp down flat time of a scan signal applied to a scan electrode of a plasma display panel according to temperature increasing section. A sustain driving unit (50) adjusts an x_floating voltage of a sustain signal applied to a sustain electrode of the plasma display panel during a reset period of a sub field. The sustain driving unit deceases excessive-discharge type mis-discharge for mis-addressing of an address period by decreasing the x_floating voltage in case of first reset ramp down, and prevents mis-discharge during the sustain discharge period by setting the x_ floating voltage highly in case of second reset ramp down.
