PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods of identifying patients at risk for developing atherosclerosis as well as methods of treating patients already affected with an atherosclerosis-related disorder.

SOLUTION: Provided are methods of detecting individuals at risk for atherosclerosis and related vascular diseases involving detection of IL-1α autoantibodies, as well as therapeutic methods for preventing or treating atherosclerosis and related vascular diseases by administering a pharmaceutical composition comprising IL-1α autoantibodies.
