A light emitting device used for a vehicle light fitting comprises an excitation light source for generating excitation light; a wavelength conversion member for absorbing excitation light and emitting light within a prescribed wavelength range by converting the wavelength of the excitation light; and a first optical system for irradiating the wavelength conversion member with the excitation light from the excitation light source. The wavelength conversion member includes at least a first surface, a second surface opposing the first surface, and a surrounding surface disposed between the first surface and the second surface, the first optical system is constituted so as to irradiate the first surface with the excitation light from the excitation light source, and at least a part of the second surface is covered with a first light shielding means.
