摘要 An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to form an active pattern of an island shape on a gate electrode and adopt an et stopper structure, thereby reducing off currents and improving the reliability of a device. A first substrate(110) divided into a pixel unit and first and second pad units is provided. Through a first mask process, a gate electrode(121) and a gate line are formed in the pixel unit of the first substrate. An active pattern(124) of an island shape is formed on the gate electrode in a state when a first insulating layer(115a) is interposed. Through a second mask process, a second insulating laye(115b) is formed on the first substrate. Through the second mask process, first and second contact holes for exposing source and drain areas of the active pattern by removing a partial area of the second insulating layer are formed. On a channel area of the active pattern, an etch stopper(115) comprising the second insulating layer is formed. Through a third mask process, source and drain electrodes(122,123) are formed in the pixel unit of the first substrate. The source and drain electrode are electrically connected with the source and drain area of the active pattern through the first and second contact holes. Through a third mask process, a data line(117) defining a pixel area by crossing the gate line is formed. The first substrate and a second substrate are attached to each other.
